TAYLOR HICKS WINS AMERICAN IDOL
Simon Cowell was correct when he predicted Taylor Hicks would become the next American Idol after his performances Tuesday night. The 29-year-old Alabama native beat out 22-year-old Katharine McPhee after receiving a majority of the 63.4 million votes cast. Last season's American Idol winner Carrie Underwood kicked off the two-hour results show by taking the stage alongside Taylor and Katharine and singing "I Made it Through the Rain." The rest of the evening was packed with performances from a host of singers and the Top 12 American Idol finalists.
Several clips from last night's American Idol finale are already on YouTube. Included are Prince's performance, and Taylor Hicks' winning moment. Catch 'em before they're removed!
CHRIS DAUGHTRY TURNING DOWN FUEL?
Ousted American Idol contestant Chris Daughtry has always wanted to be in a rock band, but it looks like Fuel is not the way he's going to do it. TMZ reports that the shaved-head crooner is going to pass on the group's offer to be its new lead singer in order to focus on a solo career.
Fuel has been searching for a front man since Brett Scallions quit in February, and nominated Daughtry for the gig when he was voted off Idol a couple of weeks ago. But even though he performed the Fuel song "Hemorrhage" during the competition, Daughtry has indicated that he wants to strike out on his own. He told reporters recently, "I'm a songwriter myself. To be able to launch my own career would be a dream."
Daughtry is still under contract with American Idol through the summer, and would have to get special permission to take any job that wasn't show or Idol tour related.
RED HOT CHILI PEPPERS ARE RED HOT
If the Red Hot Chili Peppers were thrilled this week when Stadium Arcadium became their first number-one record, they?ll be ecstatic next week to see that, for the second week in a row, Stadium Arcadium is at the top of the Billboard chart. According to Nielson SoundScan, the album sold an additional 157-thousand copies this week which brings the two-week total sales to more 600-thousand. Even though sales dropped 65 percent, the band was still able to edge out rapper Cam?ron?s latest album for the top spot. Tool's 10,000 Days was #3, The Raconteurs debuted at #7 with Broken Boy Soldiers and Pearl Jam's self-titled CD was #10.
RADIOHEAD HUNGRY TO HIT THE ROAD
Radiohead will hit the road here in the U-S next month, and the English legends are gearing up to showcase some of their new songs. In an interview with NME, guitarist Jonny Greenwood said that he?s been excited about touring for well over a year now, and that they have full intentions of debuting some tracks off their upcoming album for the American audiences. Frontman Thom Yorke will also be releasing his first solo record this summer. Radiohead play Philadelphia on June 1st.
TOM DELONGE: LEAVING BLINK-182 TRAUMATIC
Angels And Airwaves founder and frontman Tom DeLonge says that he left Blink-182 in order to spend more time with his family and be a better father to his young daughter. But he told LAUNCH that even that didn't make the decision any easier for him. "I needed to do something different that benefited the way I wanted to be a father, and so I did. It was the hardest decision I ever made in my life. It was definitely the most stressful and traumatic in the sense of where I kind of walked away from something that was my identity, and so I was really depressed and I didn't want to play music anymore, but I know I needed to."
The debut album from Angels And Airwaves, We Don't Need To Whisper, arrived in stores on Tuesday (May 23rd).
