Income tax

OK, so I'm sure this has been asked, and most like answered... but i'm pondering it anyway.

Why don't we get rid of "income tax" and just add a 1% sales tax.

Now these are some really rough numbers... but go with me here.

The population of the US is listed at around 301 billion. Now if you assume that each of those people spends say $50 a week on "stuff" (or in the case of children has that money spent on them by someone else) that works out to $7,829,638,622 earned off of a 1% tax.

Now most people spend more than $50 a week on stuff, (groceries, eating out, clothes, shampoo, whatever) SO the income stream is probablly going to be higher.

What I like about this is you can't dodge it, you buy something... you pay. Even illegal immigrants would be paying money into the system.

Now I'm sure there are all kinds of things wrong with this very simple idea, that I'm just not seeing, and that is why we don't do it... but I sure would like to know what they are.
