Wounded Rabbit

Bob Lester's picture

Passing through the country side, windows rolled down on my ole 63, had the world by the tail.
Suddenly out of nowhere something crossed the road underneath my pickup. I didn't even have time to make out what it was.
All I saw was a blur of grey and then a thump and all was still again. I stopped the pickup, got out and looked underneath and behind me.
There, in the middle of the road was wounded rabbit. I could tell it was pretty bad by the exhibit on display.
Now! I had two choices, go to my pickup and drive off, or take the time and try and help the critter lying in the road.
I had gloves in the pickup, I put them on and gently reached down and picked the rabbit up. It was one of them skinny Jackrabbits. I placed it in the bed of the truck and started home with it to get it some help. Needless to say it died on the way into town. I gave it a decent burial next to another loss..one fine hunting dog.
Life applies to everything. Life is part of everything. Sure there are inornate objects without life within themselves, but are certainly currently or pastly associated with someone or something with life.
Are you a wounded rabbit? Do you know any wounded rabbits? On the outside their ears are perked up, their stride is fast and sure, their intended destinations are fixed, then out of nowhere..along comes one of lifes unexpeced surprises.
We are all rabbits, we all have wounds, we all are standing or walking in the middle of lifes highway, and certainly all of us will encounter lifes surprises, lifes devastations. lifes wonders, lifes unseen but revalent endoresements upon us all.
Like the rabbit in this story, there are those who have a choice when it comes to our wounds: l. they can walk away, or 2. they can offer comfort and assurrance.
We all have the stain of life upon us, we all endorse and embrace life, we all deny life, we all get wounded, but we have to go on. We can continue to lick our wounds and let them fester until they destroy us from the fatal infection of finalization. Or we can look within ourselves and others to find the medicine of meditation and prayer to heal us all.
Believe it, receive it. Bob Lester
